USDA Announces Conservation Reserve Program Signups for 2022

Monetary incentives exist for agricultural producers and landowners who may sign upfor the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), a cornerstone conservation program offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and a key tool in the Biden-Harris Administration effort to address climate change and achieve other natural resource benefits.  The open period for the General CRP signup will run from Jan. 31 to March 11, and the Grassland CRP signup will run from April 4 to May 13.  For more information, click here.

Covid19 Response Loans authorized through section 1001 of the American Rescue Plan Act

The Food Supply Chain Guaranteed Loan Program provides financial support to qualified lenders whose loan applicants want to start or expand middle of the food supply chain activities  such as aggregation, processing, manufacturing, storage, transportation, wholesale, or distribution of food. The program’s goal is to increase capacity and help create a more resilient, diverse, and secure U.S. food supply chain. The CDFA Healthy Soils Program

This fund provides financial incentives to California growers and ranchers to implement conservation management practices that improve soil health. The application period is from November 21, 2021, through February 25, 2022, at 5 p.m. PT or until funds are expended. The American Farmland Trust (AFT) 2021 Brighter Future Fund

This fund aims to provide grants of up to $5,000 directly to farmers and ranchers who are BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and/or women. As of November 2021, applications are now being accepted and awards will be distributed until available funds are expended.  Cost Share Assistance for becoming Certificed Organic

Cost is often a barrier to farmers' ability to get an organic certification.  This new USDA program can help organic farmers get their certification by providing cost-share assistance to producers and handlers of agricultural products for the costs of obtaining or maintaining organic certification under the USDA’s National Organic Program.  Click here for more information

CalCAP loans for Small Businesses

The California Capital Access Program for Small Business (CalCAP SB or Program) encourages banks and other financial institutions to make loans to small businesses that have difficulty obtaining financing.  A State financing authority provides loan insurance to encourage the financial institutions to make the loans to qualified small businesses.  More information can be found at

Specialty Crop Block Grant

The California Department of Food and Agriculture's (CDFA) Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) funds projects that enhance the competitiveness of California specialty crops. The SCBGP is designed to support all sectors of California's specialty crop industry and improve the performance of California specialty crops within local, domestic, national, and international markets.  Farm and ranching businesses are eligible to apply--check back in 2022 for deadlines.  Browse here for more information:

Access to Capital through Mandela Partners

The California BIPOC Farmer and Land Steward Relief Fund was created to provide financial support for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color farmers and land stewards impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and CA wildfires.  ​

El Fondo de Ayuda para Agricultores y Administradores de la Tierra de California BIPOC (por sus siglas en inglés) fue creado para brindar apoyo financiero a agricultores y administradores de la tierra negros, indígenas y de color afectados por la pandemia de COVID-19 y los incendios forestales de California.

This program provides financial assistance grants to implement irrigation systems that save water on California agricultural operations. Application is open until January 18, 2022, and is on a first-come, first-served basis based on meeting minimum score. National Institute of Food & Agriculture program experts will host an informative Farm of the Future webinar September 9, at 3 p.m. CT. Farm of the Future is a competitive grant program to establish an agricultural test bed and demonstration site. It seeks to launch this rural test bed for precision agriculture, smart automation, data connectivity and transfer to demonstrate best practices in agriculture, forestry, and animal production systems that enhance sustainability and farm profitability.  Register Here
