Sonoma Strong -- Better together!
We always knew we were a strong community, but never dreamed we would be so tested as we were last October in the fires that swept across our hills, valleys, and cities. During the fires and in their aftermath, we saw so many individuals and groups pulling together to rise up and rebuild—the stories of generosity keep growing daily. Our non-profit was able to help in a small way by serving as the fiscal sponsor—without cost—for the fire-destroyed Mark West Pre School which is raising funds to rebuild. We were able to use our fiscal sponsorship and event support at a spaghetti feed-and-auction fundraiser on January 6th, and help the Re-Build Mark West Pre School group raise over $50,000—all of which goes to the fire recovery pre-school rebuilding campaign in its entirety. Our small staff volunteered many hours of their time to help make this event a success, and contribute back to our community—one example in many of Sonoma Strong being celebrated on April 28th in the Human Race.
We are building our team and invite you to join us in our fundraising effort and on Race Day Saturday April 28th. In addition to helping with community sustainability our non-profit North Coast Resource Conservation & Development Council (NCRC&DC) performs environmental education and action with youth and our community that involves on-the-ground change and makes a real difference in pollinator protection, water conservation, climate change, and healthy sustainable communities in our rural north coast.
One of the NCRC&DC's signature programs is Bee Patches (beepatches.org) that plants pollinator habitat with the Girl Scouts. This year is targeting areas in or near the fire-damaged lands. We work with Girl Scouts, and partner with a farm or ranch to build habitat for these tiny wildlife critical to humans and wildlife alike. The girls learn about pollinator habitat needs, design a patch to meet those needs, and select native plants suitable for each site’s particular ecosystem. Finally, the patch is planted, and the girls watch over it through the next year as four seasons of blooming healthy pollinator forage fill their landscape.
Our other youth environmental education and action programs include Rain Catchers (raincatchers.info) that builds rooftop rainwater collection and storage systems at schools, and Worm Wizards of Waste (wormwizards.org) that turns school food scrap garbage into compost. Our programs all rely on making simple changes that cumulatively make for big impact.
On Saturday, April 28, 2018, our team will walk (and some may run) in the 3K or 10K Human Race. Team members are asking supporters, friends and family to sponsor our effort by giving $10, $20, $50, $100 or whatever amount an individual/company can donate (the donation is tax deductible, and will help make a difference to our local community)!
You might be asking, “What is the Human Race?” The Human Race is a nationwide community fundraising event for nonprofit organizations. In Sonoma County, it’s the largest collaborative fundraising event and the largest Human Race in the nation! It has been one of the most successful fundraisers for local nonprofits for over 35 years and it continues to grow. In 2016 the NCRC&DC had our best year ever, raising nearly $8,000, and this year we are setting our goal at $10,000 so that we can continue to build these great community programs and be there for all of our residents.
The non-profit NCRC&DC is serving without charge as the fiscal sponsor for the January 6 Spaghetti Feed fundraiser being held by the Mark West Community Pre-School to raise funds to re-build the pre-school destroyed in the Tubbs fire of October 2017. Donations made to the Pre-School Fire Recovery effort go 100% to the Rebuild Mark West Pre-School, except for any credit card or PayPal processing fees. Donations made to the NCRC&DC for this fundraiser are tax deductible. If you would prefer to support this effort by check, then please make your check out to the NCRC&DC and make a note on the check that it is for the Mark West PreSchool Fire Fund, and mail it to the NCRC&DC, P.O. Box 6417, Santa Rosa, CA 95406.
